The Canada China Business Council Beijing Chapter is pleased to have Professor Ben J. Sopranzetti of the Department of Finance and Economics of Rutgers Faculty of Management, The State University of New Jersey provide a seminar in the area of behavioral finance. Investors have this silly tendency to optimally sell winning investments (and realizing the capital gains), but foolishly holding on to losing investments when they should be dumping them. This behavior is pervasive across markets, and is due to a currently "in vogue" theory of utility, called Prospect Theory. Prospect theory has to do with the disparate manner in which individuals view gains and losses.
Professor Sopranzetti will give several real world examples of how prospect theory affects individuals: real estate investments, betting at the racetrack, gambling at a casino, even business relationships. This topic will be of keen interest to any business person with a curiosity to learn more about investor behavior in financial markets. It will probably open their eyes to their own "suboptimal" behavior regarding their own investment portfolios.
